My Big Chop

My Big Chop
I have been natural for a little over a year now and this is where I started. I transitioned for about 2 or 3 months and then one day during a particularly trying detangling session I brought out the scissors. Pictured above and below is what I ended up with. Lol! Now I am in no way endorsing do-it-yourself big chopping, but I will say there was no going back after this...

What's funny is I looked super excited about this hair cut, and initially I guess I was. That soon faded once I woke up the next morning and realized, so yeah... I cut all my hair off and I still have this forehead. To make matters worse this was a new head of hair with a new set of needs and maintenance. I missed my doughnut! I would say for about 3 months I was rocking knit hats in every color, design and fabric. I had a royal blue one that I was particularly fond of.

I also had an assortment of Quick wigs and homemade ones! Yes y'all, I made some wigs! Lol! Shout out to youtube!
Out and about in my homemade wig
It really took a lot of encouragement from friends and family to just go for it, and with the help of a doubled up goodie elastic head band I finally shared my hair with the world. Did I love it? NO! It was growing on me though... Tell me about your big chop!

  1. Well my big chop is not exciting. I had played around with the idea of going natural for a couple of months till one day I was talking to one of my friends about it and we decided that we would go on this natural journey together. Honestly I am not sure I would have done it if I didn't have someone doing it with me to encourage each other.

I transition for about 5 months and hated it but I mostly wore braids and/or wigs. I decided once I took my braids out I would wear my natural hair so March 2007 that is what I did. I wasn't nervous I just did it without much thought, I went to a natural hair stylest to do my BC. My inital reaction wasn't too bad I thought "ok I can handle this" that was until I had to wash my own hair and I started looking like a cotton ball and looking back at my old pictures all I can do is laugh. I became a product junkie (well I still am). 3 Years later I am just now starting to embrace my hair as it is and not what I think or would like for it to look like. Being natural has defintley been a journey.

  2. Nikki thank you so much for sharing. Going natural is absolutly a journey. We often have to rethink what our idea of beauty is.
